Constitutional Rights

John Peters' Plan for Florida District 16

The Constitution is the foundation of our Republic and the guarantor of the freedoms that every American holds dear. John Peters is an unwavering defender of the Bill of Rights and believes that the role of government is to protect individual liberties, not restrict them. From the right to keep and bear arms to the freedom to worship and speak freely, families in Brandon, Bradenton, and throughout Florida's 16th District can count on John to stand firm in defense of their constitutional rights.

Protecting the Second Amendment

The right to keep and bear arms is a fundamental constitutional right, and John Peters will never waver in his defense of it. Law-abiding gun owners in Valrico, Fish Hawk, and Lithia should never have to worry about Washington politicians trying to strip them of their rights. John opposes any federal legislation that would create new gun registries, ban commonly owned firearms, or infringe on the ability of responsible citizens to protect themselves and their families.

At the same time, John supports enforcing existing laws, improving the background check system, and ensuring that those who are genuinely dangerous are prevented from accessing firearms. The answer to gun violence is not to punish law-abiding citizens but to hold criminals accountable and improve mental health services in communities like Ruskin, Wimauma, and Gibsonton.

Defending Religious Liberty and Free Speech

John Peters believes that religious freedom and free speech are the cornerstones of a free society. Families in Riverview, Palmetto, and Ellenton should never be compelled to violate their deeply held beliefs by government mandate. John will oppose any legislation that forces individuals, businesses, or organizations to act against their conscience and will fight to protect the First Amendment rights of all Americans.

Supporting Law Enforcement

Safe communities require strong, well-supported law enforcement. John Peters stands firmly behind the men and women who protect our neighborhoods in Lakewood Ranch, Bloomingdale, and across Manatee and Hillsborough counties. He supports full funding for local police departments, opposes efforts to defund or dismantle law enforcement, and believes in policies that promote community policing and build trust between officers and the residents they serve.

John also supports appointing judges who interpret the Constitution as written, not as they wish it were written. An independent judiciary that respects the separation of powers is essential to preserving the rights of every citizen in our district.
